Ancient Forest Trail

August 15, 2011

Since June 15, 2011, Katimavik volunteers working five days a week have helped the Caledonia Ramblers in making good progress with the Universal Boardwalk at the Ancient Forest Interpretive Site. One hundred and twenty meters of foundation is now built and decking should cover this 120 meters section by the end of August.

Continued support for the boardwalk from sponsors and visitors to the Ancient Forest trail has provided the Ramblers with In Kind contributions, grants, and donations by visitors. This most recent support has been helpful toward construction of a 26 feet span bridge to overcome an obstacle to the boardwalk. Construction will begin on the bridge in the next 10 days, and be completed early September.

So far this year – to August 15 and Day#41 of the project, 900 hours of volunteer labour has gone into the boardwalk; this, combined with 500 hours last year totals 1400 hours to date.

With the most challenging sections behind us (we hope!), our estimate of 5000 hours for construction of the entire 400 meters of boardwalk looks reasonable.

Thanks everyone for your support!

July 4, 2011 update on the Ancient Forest Trail - Universal Boardwalk being built by the Caledonia Ramblers

Caledonia Ramblers volunteers began Phase 2 of the Universal Boardwalk with Day #18 on June 17th with the intention of extending the existing 50 meters of completed boardwalk to 330 meters before winter.

The momentum to complete this project is continuing to build with about $12,000 of financial and In Kind help so far this year, and a partnership with the Katimavik organisation which will provide volunteer labour to work on the boardwalk beginning July 2011 through to June 2012.

November 2010 update on the Universal Boardwalk the Caledonia Ramblers are building at the Ancient Forest Trail.

The 400 meter boardwalk will enable access to the Ancient Forest for visitors in wheelchairs and others with mobility or mental challenges - as well all others who wish to use the boardwalk.

Various agencies in Prince George with clients who will benefit from the access the boardwalk will provide are: Prince George Brain Injured Group, AiMHi Community Living Association, B.C. Paraplegic Association and Canadian Mental Health Association.

The project is expected to take 3 years to complete with an estimated 4000 volunteer hours from the Ramblers. So far this year 414 hours has gone into completing 40 meters of the Uniwalk and work will continue until snow calls a halt.

With an estimated cost of material at $40,000 - this year has seen $17,345 awarded in grants to the Ramblers toward these materials with every indication that funds sufficient to complete the project will be available.

Donations of materials this year total $7,150; these grants and donated materials combined with $1800 donated by visitors to Ancient Forest Trail totals $26,295 in contributions.
